Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia Center for Health Equity Joins Philadelphia Department of Public Health, School District of Philadelphia, and St. Christopher’s Children’s Hospital for Back-to-School Event

The Community Health Partnership Clinic provide resources and supplies to help families prepare for the upcoming school yearwith a focus on asthma education

PHILADELPHIA CREAM, August 4, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — Today, experts from Children’s Hospital Philadelphia creamCenter for Health Equity, Philadelphia Department of Public Health, St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children and the Philadelphia School District Philadelphia cream gathered at a Community Health Partnership Clinic and Back to School event at the CDC Church of Compassion in Philadelphia cream providing local families with resources, supplies and asthma care information for a successful school year.

Asthma is the most common chronic disease of childhood and the leading reason children miss school, visit emergency rooms, and are admitted to the hospital. An estimated 5 million American children have asthma. Philadelphia creamOne in four children suffers from asthma.

“Asthma causes swelling, mucus production and compression of the airways. With the right medication and an asthma care plan, we can control these airway changes,” said Tyra Bryant-StephensMD AVP, Health Equity Lead and Director and Founder of the Community Asthma Prevention Program at CHOP. “We are seeing an increase in emergency room visits and hospitalizations of children with severe asthma attacks. These attacks are completely preventable and we want to make sure all children are prepared for a successful and healthy school year.”

“The Philadelphia Department of Health wants you to know that there are steps parents can take to help control their child’s asthma, especially during the back-to-school season. If your child is prescribed a controller medication, make sure they take it every day, even if they don’t feel sick. The goal of this type of medication is to prevent asthma attacks, so it should be taken daily,” said Stacy Kallum, director of the Division of Maternal, Child and Family Health at the Philadelphia Department of Public Health. “We also suggest eliminating common asthma triggers from the home; this may mean banning smoking indoors, using dust covers on mattresses and pillows, washing stuffed animals.”

“Make an appointment before school starts to prepare for a successful year with asthma and discuss your concerns with your doctor or nurse,” said Daniel R. Taylor, DO, FAAP, FACOP, director of community pediatrics and child advocacy at St. Christopher’s Children’s Hospital. “Sometimes it’s difficult to get a prescription for asthma medication. When this happens, let your doctor or asthma practitioner know right away.”

The CHOP Center for Health Equity and the CDC Compassionate Community co-hosted the 3rd Community Health Partnership Back-to-School Clinic to help families prepare for a successful school year! At the event, CHOP distributed backpacks filled with school supplies, provided sports screenings, dental exams, and haircuts for children, and offered free sports equipment, books, and library cards onsite. Community partners offered resources including after-school program information and crisis intervention training.
