As we prepare for the new academic year, Dr. Lynn Denny, medical director of Mercer Medicine Campus Health, spoke to The Den about how to get health care at the newly revamped campus medical clinic.
Campus Health was previously called the Student Health Center. Why the change?
Treating students is always our number one priority. However, we also receive Mercer faculty and staff for urgent care visits. We wanted to have an all-inclusive name, so we opted for Campus Health.
Who can access Campus Health?
Any student currently enrolled at Mercer, regardless of insurance type, can see us! We can also see current Mercer faculty or staff who are in urgent need of care, but we do not replace their primary care provider. Employees looking for a primary care provider can visit the Mercer Medicine clinic located in downtown Macon.
What is Mercer Medicine?
Mercer Medicine is the clinical practice of Mercer University School of Medicine and an affiliate of the School of Medicine. Campus Health is managed by Mercer Medicine, which also operates a multispecialty clinic in downtown Macon and six rural primary care clinics.
What services do you offer to students?
Medical visits for acute illnesses and injuries, various vaccinations, sexually transmitted infection testing, women’s health (excluding IUD and Nexplanon), travel clinics, health education, primary care if the student has basic administrative insurance, and mental health visits by primary care providers, not psychiatrists. If we can’t resolve your issue at Campus Health, we will refer you to a local specialist who can help. So we are a great resource, especially when you are new to Mercer.
What mental health services are available at Campus Health?
At Campus Health, our primary care providers perform an initial assessment and treat patients as part of their training. Sometimes, students will need to be referred to a mental health practitioner and/or therapist. We work closely with Mercer Counseling and Psychological Services to ensure you get the care you need.
What about our campuses where there is no health center?
We have physical locations at the Homer and Ruth Drake Field House in Macon and the Sheffield Student Center in Atlanta, but our services are available to all Mercer students and staff. Telehealth visits are available to Mercer students and faculty/staff as long as they are physically in the state of Georgia at the time of the visit.
How can I be seen at Campus Health?
We are excited that online booking is now available! You can also schedule an appointment at Campus Health by calling us. Our phone number in Macon is 478-301-2696. Our phone number in Atlanta is 678-547-6130. While walk-in appointments are available, we highly recommend scheduling an appointment as walk-in appointments are limited.
Can Campus Health be my primary healthcare provider?
For students with Mercer Core Administrative Insurance, Campus Health is considered their primary healthcare provider. Students with other health insurance plans can schedule an appointment to discuss us as their primary healthcare provider. Employees looking for a primary healthcare provider can visit Mercer Medicine.
What is the benefit of coming to Campus Health?
Mercer University Campus Health offices are conveniently located on both the Macon and Atlanta campuses, making it easy to access the care you need. Plus, our compassionate and knowledgeable staff is uniquely prepared to serve the Mercer community.
